Liposuction is a procedure to sculpt a new contour to your body by removing fat. It is best suited to localized areas of fat that do not respond well to diet or exercise. Liposuction is not a weight loss treatment, however, and for patients above certain weights, liposuction may provide no aesthetic benefit. During your consultation, Dr. Blechman will discuss your desires and expectations with you, and an individualized plan tailored to your needs will be explained.

Liposuction is performed under sedation or general anesthesia and takes between one and three hours to perform depending upon the number of areas to be treated and the volume of fat to be removed. The procedure makes use of tiny incisions placed in well-hidden locations. First, the area to be treated is injected with fluid that contains an anesthetic and an agent to minimize bleeding. Then a narrow tube (referred to as a cannula) is inserted under the skin and uses suction to remove the excess fat. Liposuction can also be combined with other procedures such as a tummy tuck.

Patients go home the day of surgery and are permitted to walk around and commence with light activities. Most patients will return to work within a week. An elastic garment will be placed over the treated areas to provide snug compression which must be worn continuously for approximately one month. It is normal to experience bruising and swelling after surgery, and possibly some drainage of fluid from the incisions for a few days. It may take many months before all the swelling resolves and the final results are seen.

Complications from liposuction are uncommon. As an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Blechman takes a conservative and educated approach to liposuction and will discuss in detail all the risks, alternatives, and benefits prior to performing surgery.
